Name: Camille Lamballe Age: 16 Gender: Female Occupation: Versaille Lady in waiting to Marie Antoinette Social Class: Second Estate Financial situation: Very wealthy, large personal fortune Appearance: Very fashionable. There are different schedules for each day, but usually I go wherever the queen goes to watch her rule. After all the duties are done, the queen and I and a couple of her friends go to the Petit Trianon and spend the afternoon drinking tea and talking. Sometimes, we call designers and patissiers to the palace and get dresses, accessories, shoes and desserts made for us. After spending the afternoon in peace, we go back to the palace and wait until dinner is prepared. Same as breakfast in the morning, i must wait until the queen and king are finished. In Versaille, we have many guests and company. We often entertain these people by gambling and playing cards. Unlike the queen, i am French so the people in Versaille have no prejudice against me. However, since i am not the queen, i have less privileges than the queen. I am very unsatisfied how i am always in the shadow of the queen. Portrait (Mr. Barrons changed his mind-you must have a portrait)

Diary # I: Before the Storm
As usual, my servants woke me up in the morning and dressed me up. Then went to the Queen’s bedroom and watched her wake up and change with the rest of the Versaille ladies. Following the Queen, we all walked towards the dinning area and as usual, the Queen sits in the center, next to the king, the others, including myself wait until they are finished and when they leave we had our breakfast. After breakfast, I decided to go back to my room and change into something a little bit cooler. I’ve noticed it’s been very hot lately, it hasn’t rained for a while.. Well, whatever, my shoes won’t get dirty then. Today was one of the laid-back days where we didn’t really do anything.
Well, since the Queen was not feeling so well, she decided to stay in bed. So, a couple of Versaille ladies and I decided to go out to the garden to have some tea. As usual, the conversation was mostly about the Queen. Most of the people in the Palace dislike the Queen because she’s Austrian and because of her extravagant spendings. As we gathered, we

talked about all the rumors going around the Palace. One of my close friends in the Palace, Elizabeth said that she heard from a couple of the servants that she is often seen crying in her room. She guesses that it is because she is so embarrassed she cannot give birth to an heir. Liz even said “that Autrichienne has no say in what happens in France when she’s not even French and has no place in the Palace when she cannot even give birth to an heir.” Also, another friend even said the Queen is unfaithful to the king and is having an affair with a soldier from the military. Another mate even said she heard rumors that the Monarch is in huge depth and people found out how extravagant the Queen is and are now cutting off most of her expenses on clothes and accessories. Poor her. Now she’ll really have nothing except for her trashy reputation.
Well, the Queen’s decided to host a party once again at the Palace. This time, she’s inviting even more guests than last time. To get outfits for the party, she called some designers to the Palace and I ordered a gorgeous dress with matching shoes and beautiful accessories. Since the Queen has money to host a party again, I’m guessing the rumor about the huge dept is just a lie. Hope so, or else I can't buy new shoes from the autumn collection!
After, getting outfits made, same as breakfast in the morning, i waited until the queen and king were finished with supper and had it after. Well, since I’ve got more planning for the party tomorrow, I should get some beauty sleep now. Good night.
Diary #2: From Crisis to Revolution (Diaries from "The Moderate Stage", Reading 2)
It has been very chaotic the past few years. The people of France have been very angry at the Monarch. There have been many riots and attempts to invasion into the palace. The Third Estate continues declaring themselves the National Assembly and continues gaining more and more control of France everyday. The National Assembly has made some serious reforms which I am not very happy about. They have made many new laws and changed the way France is being organized and run. I feel the king must take serious actions and get back to ruling France the way it was before, before the situation becomes worse. Even though the king declared the National Assembly as criminals and threatened them to arrest them, the National Assembly always seems to go around the problems like the time when the tennis court oath happened. What I am most unhappy about is the Declaration of Rights of Man and the Citizen. It states that all men are free and equal in rights. How could this be? For the longest time, France has been divided into the first, second, third estates and the monarchy and all of a sudden all people are equal? The power in France belongs to the King and the monarch not the people! Well I seriously need the king to get the power back he had and get back the old tax system. The monarch has been in great depth and I have not been supplied with what I need these days. The king has cut down on the expenses and the meals have not been as nice as before. It sure has been very noisy around here. There are always angry crowds of peasants and people in the third estate protesting at the gates. As the harvest time approaches and the farmers cannot grow their crops, they began to become violent. I heard that the king has a plan to get back his country and the power he has lost by working with the queen’s brother, Leopold by escaping to Austria and invade France and get rid of the Assembly. Many of the people in the palace have already escaped to other countries to escape from all the chaos. A lot of people suggested I do the same. Now, I am packing my bag to escape to Austria. I have heard many of the escapees have been recognized and caught and have been arrested and are on their way back to the palace. It is going to be very dangerous however I have decided that is it more dangerous to stay here in all the rebellions and protests. I have decided I am going to take a couple of my friends including Elizabeth with me and a servant named Aimee Vasser to take care of us. She has been very well to me and the palace and I will be devastated if anything happened to her while I am in Austria. I have decided to take her somewhere safe with me and hope for the best in France and wait till the old ways return. Till the next time, farewell.
Diary #3-The Reign of Terror
Everything has changed. Life has been disastrous. Everyday I wake up in fear, hearing the sounds of other inmates in the prison. All complaining, screaming for forgiveness, pleading for a trial, asking for freedom. I am cellmates with my servant, Aimee Vasser. Most of the inmates here are not guilty of anything just simply accused of being a threat to the new government including me and my cellmate. This horrifying misunderstanding all started with the creation of the Committee of Public Safety and the law of suspects they created. And even before that the monarchy was overthrown and a new assembly called the Convention which was set up as the country’s new law-making. In 1792, September 21st, King Louis was de-throned and France was now a Republic. After two months, he was put in trial for high treason and was found guilty and was beheaded in public January 21st a year after. After that, the people who overthrew called themselves the Sans Culottes. They are republics who hated the monarchy and thought power should belong to ordinary people like themselves. The Sans Culottes are completely taken over, threatening the people of France. After, the monarchy was crushed, everyone who was ever in contact with the royal family was suspected of being against the new government. This was called the law of suspects which started in September. Groups of citizens in every town had to draw up a list of people they suspected of opposing the government. Anyone could fall under suspicion and since I lived in the Royal palace of Versaille, I was suspected. Without any way to prove my innocent, I was arrested and sent to prison and locked in. Many people from the palace were arrested and put into prison like myself. Some were sentenced deportation and death. My cellmate, Aimee Vasser who was once a servant at the Versaille Palace was also misunderstood. We are both suspected of being against the government. Even though life in Versaille was amazing with parties’ everyday, nice dinners, gorgeous dresses and I hope everyday I get back the life I had before, I just now pretend I am not an opponent to the new Republican system. I am very glad I have Aimee as a cellmate. She is very trustworthy and we feel the way about the way France is run now. It is completely chaotic and disastrous and unorganized. She has told me many stories about how her friends and neighbors were suddenly kidnapped by members of the Committee of Public Safety and put into trial and after that, she has never seen them ever again. She has even seen some people she knew beheaded by the guillotine. We both are expecting if they decide that we are actually against the government, we will be murdered and beheaded by the guillotine in public. I sure hope this does not happen and they let us go soon. Till the day the decision is made, farewell.
